How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If  new audi car key  has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.



4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available particularly in the case of an Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a typical part that is found across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
